Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River—Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer. He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart. Sure, life changed back home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return—riding the waves in Monterrey and living out of a van. It’s the perfect life, one he never wants to give up, no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.
Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year. Time away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts. Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overdrive—throwing her at every eligible male in the pack. Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California the ideal location to get away from everything pack related. Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another wolf butts into her every activity. Doesn’t he know the rules?
Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint? Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?
Long, Heather. Wolf on Board: Wolves of Willow Bend (Book 9.5) . Heather Long. Kindle Edition.
Roaming is the chance for a young wolf to stretch themselves and see the world outside of their pack’s territory. Very similar to the Amish Rumspringa. A chance for them to learn new things and new ways of doing things they already do. They are watched over by the Enforcers but still have ties to their home pack. Most of the time, they return to their home pack after a set timetable previously agreed upon.
Mimi Chase is Owen Chase’s younger sister. She’s had training with the Hunters, but that’s not where her true skills lie. Mimi is one of the most gifted Trackers her pack has seen in a long while. This skill is part of why she wants to learn to bake.
Jake Danes is Luc Danes‘ younger brother. After the disaster at Hudson River, Jake turned Lone Wolf and headed for California. He spent most of his time surfing. He worked at various odd jobs to keep him in cash. All that changed the day he ran into Mimi.
All this changes when Mimi catches the scent of a female wolf, who doesn’t belong to a known pack. She reports this to Mitch, the local Enforcer, who promptly advises her to “hole up” with Jake until this can be investigated. Then all H3ll breaks loose. Mitch comes calling, and calls Mason in her presence. A human packmate, Amelia Sullivan, has gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Mason wants her to work with the Enforcers to track Amelia.
All the while, Jake has texted Brett with details of what is going on. The reply? To assist her as needed. Will Mimi be able to track Amelia? And what is to become of the budding relationship between her and Jake?
