Wolves of Willow Bend Book 9: Snow Wolf

War may be coming for the Yukon, but Diesel’s battle is very personal…

Ranae is the youngest of the Buckleys and the only girl amongst three powerful male siblings. Her restlessness and dominant nature affected her every relationship within Willow Bend, not to mention testing the patience of her Alpha. Apprenticeship to the Hunters fed her desire for a purpose. When her Alpha and eldest brother ask her to undertake a mission to the Yukon territory, she’s thrilled at the opportunity to be useful. Clashing with the Alpha was the last thing she expected on the dangerous assignment.

The oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs lives a gray existence. The loss of his mate so many decades before wears away at him until he doesn’t give a damn about anything. The problems of the other packs are not his, and he prefers to be left to his isolation. The arrival of the Chief Enforcer annoys him, but it is the wolf traveling with him who wakes the predator in Diesel. The scent of mate clings to her, but she rejects his overtures and challenges him on every level.

I have read all the other books in this series and they were all good and enjoyable and satisfying to read. This book however tops them all - Heather Long has somehow managed to improve out of sight in certain areas. I am trying to figure out why the story telling was so much better. The character development was superb. The suspense was beautifully balanced with the romance and the dialogue was very satisfying.
My eyes glaze over with bad language and excessive sex and fortunately there was not a lot of either. The male characters were well written and believable. The action and forward momentum have kicked up but the mysteries of her world have become so intriguing and well presented that we are in effect left with a cliffhanger in the very best sense and the reader is left wondering what the Russians will do next.
The care the author took in the writing of this novel made me wonder if she has a new editor because the quality of her world building and character dialogue is just so much better than the previous books.
Certainly whoever edited for typos missed the point that when you put someone through the wringer it's about washing clothes not a bell tower. And I did raise my eyebrows about finding 'out' mate rather than finding our mate and there were a couple more sentences that didn't make sense so whoever did the final proofreading wasn't that good - it is really important to get fresh eyes for that because after the first 50,000 words any author just reads what they thought they wrote, not what is actually there.
This book raises the whole series to a higher level and it was a joy to read such a disciplined tour de force - a great story - and well told.

Heather Long hit my favorite authors list with her Fevered and Marine series and has maintained it with this series. I've read them all and am always excited to see a new release. This one doesn't disappoint. If you are looking for a great standalone with an HEA, then look no further.

When WB Pack Hunter Ranae Buckley is sent to the Yukon Pack with the head Enforcer, her mission is to deliver a message to the old curmudgeon alpha who won't answer calls. Once at his camp, she finds nothing is what she was led to believe. It seems Diesel is a trickster, and a very wily one. But even worse he says she is his mate and that she won't be returning to Willow Bend.

Diesel is a wolf who outlived his first mate. He was approaching the fade himself when he visited WB and thought he smelled a potential mate. But the one he thought was his actually was fated for someone else. Back in the Yukon, he has found new purpose, especially when a young WB Hunter arrives in his town delivering news of attacks on other packs by Russian wolves. And Diesel begins to understand why he was wrong about a potential mate before, and how close he came to finding Ranae then. Knowing she's the one is only part of the equation, though. This old wolf will have to learn some new tricks to convince Ranae her home is with him when her allegiance to WB is so strong. But to complicate his mission to win her over, the rogue Russian wolves strike against Diesel's most vulnerable, Inuit and wolf alike.

Snow Wolf by Heather Long is the ninth book in her Wolves of Willow Bend Series. This series is truly captivating with an incredible story-line and compelling characters.

I was a little worried about Snow Wolf in the beginning. The Alpha of the Yukon pack and oldest Alpha around, Diesel, intimidated me a bit from the glimpses we were given of him in prior books. My concern laid in the feeling that he was going to be too dark, isolated and raw for me to have respect for this character. I could not have been more wrong. Peeling back the layers of this character and pack revealed an amazing pack and one absolutely incredible Alpha. *swoon* I might have been expecting King Alpha-hole/mentally unstable, but I was delivered a Valiant Knight. I kind of want to go re-read it, just writing this review. His sly humor and pursuit of Ranae Buckley, was only the beginning of what made this read fantastic.

The backstory in this series is growing immensely as we continue to follow threads into new parts of the shifter world in an attempt to discover who is harming the shifters. As the author takes us on this journey, she feeds us bread crumbs of back-stories from those we know little about.....yet. Or, at least I HOPE we continue to learn more about some of the more mysterious characters!

If you are a fan of paranormal romance, you do NOT want to miss this series and Snow Wolf was not an exception to the overall greatness contained in this series.

Woo hoo! What a ride! Diesel, the oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs, is about to have his world shaken up by Ranae Buckley a young hunter/envoy from the Willow Bend pack. Ranae is about to have her perception of the Yukon pack shook up. When these two meet worlds collide. I was worried that Diesel would be too old and set in his ways to fully appreciate Ranae. But I should have known better. Ranae would take delight in bringing Diesel kicking and screaming back to life. I love Diesels sense of humor and the fact that Ranae doesn’t just roll over for him. The are some surprising revelations about the enforcer Julian and I hope we get his story soon. I love this world and the folks who live in it. Well done Heather Long.
