Fire Maidens #1: Paris

A new generation of shifter heroes has been summoned to protect Europe’s cities from a ruthless foe – and to seek out the last of the Fire Maidens, who are absolutely off limits to the young knights tasked with protecting them. But destiny has other ideas…

Natalie Brewer has come to Paris to live out a dream, not a nightmare. Then a vampire attack exposes her to a whole new side to the City of Lights — and to her own heritage. Before she knows it, she’s swept into a world she never imagined, with gargoyles, werewolves, and dragons who claim she’s descended from a legendary shifter queen. Now her life is in danger, and it’s impossible to know who to trust, other than the mysterious stranger who risks his life for her again and again.

After a decade in the Foreign Legion, all dragon shifter Tristan Chevalier wants is to settle into a civilian life and a new job. His mission: to prove himself to the Guardians of Paris and to protect the city. But all that is threatened when an innocent woman stumbles into his life — and into his heart. Being appointed her bodyguard is a blessing and a curse, because Natalie is absolutely, positively off-limits despite the smoldering desire they both feel. Worse, every shifter in Paris has set their sights on her, from bloodthirsty vampires to power-hungry dragons and jealous rivals. For Tristan, it’s the test of a lifetime, and the outcome will affect the fortunes of an entire city.

This is going to be a great series. We move from Hawaii to Europe for this one, which is sort of an offshoot from Jewels of the Heart and Pearls of Desire. While you don't have to read either of these two series to understand this one, you should just because they are fantastic!

Natalie has followed her dream and come to Paris. She is all alone in the city of love but she isn't really here to find love, she is here to explore Paris and help out the less fortunate. She works to support herself, but she volunteers at a soup kitchen to give back. Her French is not the best and she uses the opportunity to improve it and to learn about the lives of those she meets there. She had never been one to believe in the supernatural, but lately she has been having strange dreams about, of all things, vampires. When a strange man comes into the soup kitchen she is not sure why she feels he is there to watch her, but for some reason he seems to be connected to the strange dreams. Vampire. Really? No, is must be her imagination.

Tristan has been hired by the guardians of Paris to patrol and report on vampire activity. He is drawn to one of the city's soup kitchens because of one of the volunteers. When he drops in hoping to catch a glimpse of her he is immediately on alert when he senses a vampire presence. It doesn't take him long to determine that the vampire is there for the same reason he is, Natalie.

So starts a life changing night for both Natalie and Tristan. It seems she is one of the sought after Fire Maidens whose presence in their specified city brings power and stability to the shifters who reside there and also, by association, the human population. Tristan's dragon has declared Natalie is his mate, but how can someone like him possibly be mates with someone as special as a Fire Maiden? There is no way the Guardians are going to allow that to happen.

We also get to meet Liam, who will get his story in book 2. Love me a lion shifter.

This is an exciting start to a new spinoff series from one of my favorite PNR authors. The female lead, Natalie, has moved to Paris to pursue a lifelong dream. Her treks through the city read like a travel guide describing the sights. Then she's approached by a creepy stranger at the soup kitchen where she volunteers and the man she believes to be part of the kitchen's security comes to her rescue, taking a fight against vampires to a back alley and keeping her safe at cost to himself. Natalie sees things she has trouble comprehending, but is able to get her savior to the safety of his high rise penthouse when sirens scare her attackers away.

Tristan served in the Foriegn Legion for more than a decade, where he met shifters from the two Ahoha series. He was hoping for a little respite when he took the job of protector from the Guardians of Paris, a group of elite shifters. His job is to report rogue vampire activity back to them. But when the woman from the soup kitchen is targeted and attacked, he comes to her rescue, going against orders to observe only. But what comes next is a surprise to everyone.

I listen to the audio version and the narrator did a good job. I do wish she had a bit more depth to her voice at times, but overall, this is a solid performance.

Exciting new series! Loved the premise with the whole fire maiden scenario and that the books in the series will take place in different European cities. Here's hoping for cities in Ireland and Scotland! This one is in Paris, and it was fun to touch on some of Paris' attractions. Natalie is surprised to learn that supernatural entities exist; vampires, shifters, etc., but she's even more surprised to learn that she may have more to do with that world than she anticipated. She ends up meeting Tristan; a dragon shifter, who helps protect and support Natalie. Unfortunately, old fashioned ideals get in the way of their connection. Also, an unfortunate, stuck-up supernatural gets in the way as well. The vampires aren't exactly making things easy for Natalie as well, so she's dealing with a whole lot. I love the whole mate connection, and Tristan and Natalie are really sweet together. I do wish Natalie felt a bit more for Tristan or that what she feeling came across better, but overall, they have good chemistry and definitely some heat between them. Entertaining adventure for Natalie and Tristan! I'm really excited to read the next book!

But nightmarish danger lurks in the shadows searching for a Fire Maiden. Inside; spine-chilling life-threatening issues, picturesque vivid scene descriptions, action, humor, and flaming hot romance.

Behind-closed-doors Guardian shifters plot out plans to protect the city of Paris from the dangerous beings that prowl the streets. Natalie a caring intelligent woman finds herself in horrific danger. Tristan a powerful dragon shifter, is appointed by the Guardians to be her bodyguard. Destiny has paired these two to meet, and when they do fiery desires of the heart sprout. They face quite a few scary hurdles before reaching their heavenly happy ever after.

Fantastic entertaining well-written page-turner read. Natalie proves to be a powerful heroine, and Tristan is a worthy protector. Their romance shines, and together they are quite a force. I loved how the author shows that no matter what your status is, you are worthy of true love. I found this to be a most gratifying read.

The action has moved from Hawaii to Europe and a new cast of characters come into view. The same wonderful attention to detail is showcased in the descriptions of the people and places. Thank you so much for all the work you pour into these books.
