Wolves of Willow Bend Book 9.5: Wolf on Board

The wolf days of summer are here…

Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River—Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer. He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart. Sure, life changed back home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return—riding the waves in Monterrey and living out of a van. It’s the perfect life, one he never wants to give up, no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.

Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year. Time away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts. Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overdrive—throwing her at every eligible male in the pack. Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California the ideal location to get away from everything pack related. Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another wolf butts into her every activity. Doesn’t he know the rules?

Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint? Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?

Jake Danes is a laidback surfer dude type of guy but that isn’t all he is. He is also a skilled hunter with a past. He has been surfing the world trying to find his way back to himself. When Mimi Chase winds up on the same beach as him he is a goner. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Jake reminds me a bit of Deeks from NCIS LA blonde, goofy, with the appearance of not taking anything too seriously. I like Mimi, she is strong, talented and searching for her future. She just didn’t expect to find it in Jake.
Wolf on Board is a transition book. Leaving one arc and entering another. I look forward to seeing where Ms. Long is going to take us.

What can I say? The newest edition of the Willow Bend series was absolutely wonderful. Heather Long truly has a gift for creating such vivid worlds and those who inhabit them are all unique - you can almost feel they are real. Mimi and Jake were both amazing. You can see hints of their siblings in them, but they are definitely their own people.

I would love to go on a roam like this...feeling so carefree and like the sky is the limit. A lot happened in this little novella, but my favorite part was the easy breezy domesticity of Mimi and Jake together. Both characters are well fleshed and you even get to know Mitch the Enforcer a little bit better. I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment of this fantastic series!

Jake and Mimi have some of the best banter ever. The way Jake sneaks into Mimi's heart kept me turning the pages in one sitting. Ms. Long does a great job again with creating some amazing characters that are easy to fall in love with. She also introduces a new element to the world, and I honestly don't know how she manages to keep all the aspects of this world together and keep surprising me. I definitely enjoyed every second of this story and highly recommend it.

This is part of a series, but I think it could be read standalone, although it's a pretty awesome series and I recommend them all.

For two years Jake has been having the time of his life. Following the waves and working side jobs. But lately his brother Luc been hounding him to check in more.

Mimi asked Mason's permission to roam for a year, to get away from her mother's attempts at matchmaking. Now in California, she taking all kinds of classes to learn new things.

Jake comes across Mimi while surfing, she was doing her yoga on the beach. He was curious about the beautiful wolf and uses teasing to coerce her into going for coffee with him.

I absolutely loved Mimi's snarky comebacks. 'Evading the dog catcher 101' was a favorite and had my laughing out loud.

All is not fun and games though. While perusing a bookstore Mimi encounters a female wolf and Jake intercepts her before she loses herself to her anger. Growling among the humans is frowned upon.
Mitch, who we met briefly in Snow Wolf, is their enforcer and on hearing Mimi's report on the wolf decides Jake should stay with her, at least temporarily.

Mimi and Jake do lots of fun things as they get to know each other. I love the slow build of this relationship and the surprises that get thrown in that have me itching for more.

Mitch is the messenger that gives us a glimpse of the friendship and co-operation between Mason (Willow Bend) and Brett (Hudson River) taking these books to a whole new level!

Roaming is the chance for a young wolf to stretch themselves and see the world outside of their pack’s territory. Very similar to the Amish Rumspringa. A chance for them to learn new things and new ways of doing things they already do. They are watched over by the Enforcers but still have ties to their home pack. Most of the time, they return to their home pack after a set timetable previously agreed upon.

Mimi Chase is Owen Chase’s younger sister. She’s had training with the Hunters, but that’s not where her true skills lie. Mimi is one of the most gifted Trackers her pack has seen in a long while. This skill is part of why she wants to learn to bake.

Jake Danes is Luc Danes‘ younger brother. After the disaster at Hudson River, Jake turned Lone Wolf and headed for California. He spent most of his time surfing. He worked at various odd jobs to keep him in cash. All that changed the day he ran into Mimi.

All this changes when Mimi catches the scent of a female wolf, who doesn’t belong to a known pack. She reports this to Mitch, the local Enforcer, who promptly advises her to “hole up” with Jake until this can be investigated. Then all H3ll breaks loose. Mitch comes calling, and calls Mason in her presence. A human packmate, Amelia Sullivan, has gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Mason wants her to work with the Enforcers to track Amelia.

All the while, Jake has texted Brett with details of what is going on. The reply? To assist her as needed. Will Mimi be able to track Amelia? And what is to become of the budding relationship between her and Jake?

Outlaw Wolves (Wolves of Willow Bend #13)

She doesn’t seem to be anyone’s favorite wolf…

Luciana Esposito Barrows never imagined her dream of uniting the Lone Wolves and giving them a home could go so terribly awry. First, her brother rejected her, repudiating her from Seven Hills and leaving her without a powerful ally. Then the U.S. packs put her on notice, monitoring their movements, keeping them contained…then the Russians came. The last person in the world she expected to turn on her, was her own mate.

She was everything to him…

Rayne Barrows never thought of himself as much of a romantic. In his heart, he was a soldier and had always risen to the task where he was needed. Born in the heart of the Delta Crescent pack, he’d grown up alongside a future Alpha and willingly served her father as a faithful Hound. When the battles for ascension began, he couldn’t face those he loved in combat. He chose a solitary path instead. Journeying around the world, he found himself in Italy…and discovered a wolf he could love. Luciana Esposito captured his heart and he followed her—even when he didn’t believe in her cause.

To save the woman he loves and the pack they formed, he challenged her and took her position as alpha. Can their mate bond survive such a betrayal?

Long, Heather, Outlaw Wolves

What would you do to protect your mate? Really, stop and think about it for a minute. What would you do? Would you step in front of a bullet for them? Would you challenge them in front of the pack you are both trying to form and bond? And then what?

Rayne didn’t start out to become an Alpha. He couldn’t even say he believed in Luciana’s dream. But what he would say was that he loved her more than life itself. However, he also knew how the other Alphas would react to Luciana’s dealings with the outsiders.

Luciana wasn’t sure what to do now. She was hurt beyond anything she’d ever felt before. She still couldn’t believe that Rayne had challenged her! But when someone from her past shows up, what will she do? Will she stay or go?

This story starts a new set of stories for Willow Bend. While waiting for this one, I think I reread the series at least twice, if not more. I’d always wondered how Three Rivers pack had fared. I’m one of those folks who have in the past written what could best be described as “Fan Fiction” for a favorite TV series. I love to know what happened next. Well folks, this one answers that question.

River Wolf (Wolves of Willow Bend #7)

“Yeah, I caught wind of…the only way I can describe it was pack, not pack. Wolf, not wolf. Does that make any damn sense?”
“Not really,” but he didn’t discount it. The other wolf had a good nose. “But go on anyway.”
He took another drink of water before continuing. “I kept picking it up in different places, sometimes outside a cleaners, once near a grocery store. It was always faint, like I was a day or two behind. Then I’d lose it entirely. I stopped for food at this great burger joint and there it was…fresh.”
“So, being the planner you are, you shifted and took off after it.” Luc really didn’t have to continue. “You were so caught up on the scent, you didn’t pay attention to traffic?”
Grimace turning into a snarl, Luc glared at him. “Hey, in all fairness that jerkwad didn’t have his lights on, and he didn’t slow down after he clipped me either.”
“You could have been killed, you know?” The growl rumbled through him. Of all the idiotic, dumbass ways to die… “All for some damn curiosity. It’s supposed to kill cats, not wolves.”
“I almost did you know.” The faint grin didn’t vanish. “And as luck would have it…I found it.” Irked didn’t cover his feelings on the subject.
“Found what?”
“The scent. Or should I say, the owner of the scent.” Brett frowned. “Come on, I asked you if you checked out her scent. Didn’t you notice it?”
Colby’s contradictory scents. The unusual, provocative nature of it. “You think Colby is a wolf?”

Colby Jensen was finishing up a year long community service sentence for “facilitating the theft of pharmaceuticals.” As she went through her daily routine, the difficult male patient in room 510 asked something strange of her. First he asked her to come see him before she left. Then when she did, he asked her to drive him to a small town in NY, offering to pay her quite well for her troubles. Given his injuries, she should have turned him down flat. But she really didn’t have any firm plans for what she was going to do now, so she reluctantly agreed.

Brett Dalton, Alpha of Hudson River, was concerned when the Enforcers notified him that his friend, Luc Danes had been in an accident. They reported him as being in a coma and agreed to keep him informed of any further developments. A day or so later, the Enforcers told him that Luc had checked himself out of the hospital against medical advice and left with a human female. Brett knew that meant that Luc was apparently on his way to him.

Colby didn’t understand the people in the small town Luc had given her directions to. But they seemed to be trying to help him so she gathered her things to leave. Or at least, she tried. Somehow the gorgeous Brett and his friends kept enticing her to stay a little while longer.

If there was anything that Brett was sure of, he was sure of two things. First, he needed to solve the delightful mystery that was Colby. Second, he needed to repair the pack bonds. The damage that had been done by the insane wolf had to go. Not only for himself, but for his pack. There was too much riding on it. And the last thing he needed was to have not one but two Alpha Challenges!

Wolf With Benefits (Wolves of Willow Bend #6.5)

After pushing past her, Delia tugged her away and closed the door. “Look, I get that you don’t fully understand everything you did, Shiloh. You’re a grown woman, making passion-based decisions. Passion leads to foolish choices…like that sixth pack.”

“Mom…”

“Don’t Mom me. You made the choice to go against your family and the pack that shelters us. You made a crazy call, risked your life, your future, and our position…you don’t just walk back from that.”

Long, Heather. Wolf with Benefits: Wolves of Willow Bend (Book 6.5) (pp. 4-5). Heather Long. Kindle Edition.

Shiloh Sullivan is a member of a very select group in Willow Bend. Her family is one of few all human families considered part of the Willow Bend pack. More than that, they have all remained human for generations. Her mother has tried to cut her off from all the wolf friends she grew up with. Even going so far as to stop being friends with Tiffany Huston after she took “the bite” to become a wolf like her husband, Ryan.

Matt Montgomery has gone above and beyond to stay friends with Shiloh. He has faithfully help her sneak out of her house at nights. But not even he understands what drove the 6 young humans to help gather and set up the illegal pack. Nevertheless, he’s more than ready to welcome Shiloh back home.

Shiloh was the first of the 6 Willow Bend humans to return home. After Serafina and Linc visited the Three Rivers Pack, she hopped a ride home with them, then spent several weeks answering questions for Mason and the Hunters. She now remains in Willow Bend on probation. There are a number of limitations on what she and the others can do.

Coming up with what he thinks is a brilliant plan, Matt convinces Shiloh to move in with him. The Plan? Matt lets others believe that Shiloh has moved home to be with him. But when a blizzard hits the area, will the others reach out to help her? Will her mother unbend in the end?

Rogue Wolf (Wolves of Willow Bend #4)

As Mason gives Salvatore permission to continue his search, a very scary thought comes to Margo. These disappearances are starting to look too organized to be random…

“Salvatore, I understand you want to find your sister, but if she is mated to this guy, he has no options. He’s broken the laws. He either enters a pack with his mate or the Enforcers are going to execute him.” Margo would execute him. If he was mated to Salvatore’s sister, Rayne’s death could kill her. She cut a look to him. “This is why I do not want them involved.” The Italian Alpha rose. “I will handle him. I will retrieve her. They are not mated, not truly.”

Long, Heather. Rogue Wolf (Wolves of Willow Bend Book 4) (pp. 77-78). Kindle Edition.

Lone Wolves are one thing, missing wolves are something else. These wolves are not just missing, they have totally vanished! It started with a report from Hudson River that they had 3 wolves missing. As the Enforcers begin to investigate, things take an unexpected twist.

Margo is more than a little ticked off when she is pulled off the investigation to pick up an Alpha and escort him to Willow Bend. Not just any Alpha, Salvatore is the Alpha of Alphas in Italy. Talk about stubborn!

Salvatore is in search of two people, his sister and the American male who visited their pack for 6 months before he and Lucians vanished. He’s trying to be polite but he just doesn’t get “Lone Wolves.” There’s no such thing in Europe.

As Margo and Salvatore drive to Willow Bend, she begins to notice something odd. Besides all accounts being closed, the houses have been thoroughly cleaned and bleached! Not something a wolf would do.

As Mason gives Salvatore permission to continue his search, a very scary thought comes to Margo. These disappearances are starting to look too organized to be random…
