PA Dutch Home Cooked Food

Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

Okay when I think of a single food item that makes me long for home, it’s something that my great-aunt Edith, God bless her soul, always insisted on having for New Year’s Day. According to her, if you wanted to have good luck for the entire year, the main meal of the day had to be Pork and Sauerkraut with Mashed Potatoes.

Don’t ask me why that was lucky because I couldn’t tell you! I just remember always having it for New Years Day dinner when she would eat dinner with us. Now, I love the meal so it was no hardship for me! Naturally, everything ended up in a pile in the middle of the plate.

Even after I married and left home, my mother would make this meal for me whenever we would visit. I still enjoy it to this day, just not necessarily on New Year’s Day!

I did find this explanation on why it was lucky. Pork and Sauerkraut.
