This Internet-Loved Hack Softens Butter in Seconds

Buttered bread or toast is simple and delicious, but nothing is worse than reaching for the butter from the fridge only to find it’s too cold and hard to spread.

Sure, you can pop the butter in the microwave for a few minutes, but you risk melting it too much (which also renders it unusable if you’re making your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe). And leaving it out on the counter isn’t an option when you need it ASAP. There are several hacks to soften butter in seconds, but the latest one is the most clever one yet, and possibly the least messy.

While this hack isn’t necessarily new, it’s currently trending once again online, and we think for good reason. Vital Farms recently posted about this on Instagram: “This nifty little hack for turning fridge-cold butter into soft, spreadable butter in seconds.” TikTok user roxy.369 says this is a “life hack” that’s worth trying.

Cascade Settles the Debate: Should You Be Rinsing Your Plates Before Loading the Dishwasher?

I have a confession to make: I’m a pre-rinser. Before I load dirty dishes into our dishwasher, I thoroughly rinse them off so that they’re nearly clean before being placed in the racks. But I’m not sure why I do it. Perhaps it was the thing to do when I was growing up and doing my chores, or maybe it’s because I’m worried about the water pressure and plumbing in our 1940s home.

Turns out, I’m not alone in my pre-rinsing habit. A recent survey commissioned by Procter & Gamble shows that 86% of us pre-rinse or pre-wash as part of our dishwashing routines.

I began to wonder, is my taking the time to pre-rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasherbeneficial in any way, or is it a waste of time and resources, like water? I reached out to dishwasher detergent giant Cascade to find the answers.

The Hidden Dangers of That “Mini Fried Egg” Frozen Egg Hack

When it comes to TikTok trends, I would categorize them into three buckets: the ones that are must-tries and new favorites (like feta pasta and the paper towel trick); the ones that are not worth it or don’t work (ahem, pancake spaghetti); and then the ones that are downright dangerous (looking at you avocado water storage). The worst TikTok hacks can range from innocuously unnecessary to genuine food hazards, and the latter is where the newest trend falls.

The ‘hack’ has popped up for over a year on the video-sharing app but is making the rounds yet again, with the latest iteration gaining over 10 million views. The method is always the same: freeze whole eggs in the shell, then cut the frozen egg into slices and fry those in a pan, resulting in mini, kid-sized fried eggs. But be warned—you should not be making these at home, and especially not for kids. Here’s why.

The 1 Simple Trick for the Best Bacon Ever

We cook bacon every weekend as part of our Sunday brunch tradition. My husband makes the eggs and toast while I make the bacon and cut the fruit. (Coffee is on a timer and prepped the night before.) Since we have little kids, it’s hard to stand next to the stove and make sure the bacon is prepared perfectly. Plus, I’m never a fan of the fat splattering everywhere and making a greasy mess!

During my days in a professional restaurant kitchen 20 years ago, we always cooked bacon on a sheet pan in the oven. By baking it in the oven, you can prep a lot more at a time and you can put it on a timer without having to be near the stove. But just recently, a friend told me about a trick that not only makes the best bacon but also slashes the cooking time in half.

Of course, I had to try it.

Grandma’s Hamburger Casserole

My grandmother’s hamburger casserole is classic comfort food! Featuring ground beef, noodles, and a creamy cheese sauce, this simple recipe dates back to the 1940’s. You can tweak the amount of cheese and sour cream depending on what you’ve got in the fridge — it’ll still turn out great!
