Jack of Spades:Vegas Underground Book 3

“I could find him for you and haul him back,” Stefano offers. “Let you turn his balls blue like you turned mine.”

“YOU’RE AT MY MERCY NOW, AMORE.”
Sorry, bella. You got dealt the losing hand.
Witness to a crime, you’re my prisoner now.
I didn’t mean for things to happen this way,
But tying you to my bed and making you scream
is an unexpected pleasure. A privilege, really.
And even if I did trust you, now that I’ve had a taste,
I’m not sure I’d let you go…

The story is the second in the Vegas Underground series but can easily read well as a stand-alone story. There will be a mention about people and incidences in King of Diamonds but is told in a way that the reader will not be lost. The story is about sweet, all-American girls who fall in love with mafia men. The story will also include more about Nico and Sondra, some of the battles they must face with his family, the arranged marriage contract, and true love, with a wedding.

Corey Simonson hails from Michigan and came to Vegas to attend graduate school, she has been studying psychology but is bored with it. She took a job at Bellimisso as a croupier and has a knack at being able to read players. She will have one man at her table that is off and later that night; she will learn that it is Stefano Tacone, brother to Nico who is engaged to her cousin, Sondra.

Stefano is impressed but cautious with Corey, especially after reading her file and knowing her Dad is a fed. He will ask her to work a private game upstairs, away from the casino floor, and it will become a night that changes things for both of them when a player aiming for Nico will pull a gun, and Stefano will kill him. Corey being a witness will now find herself held captive by Stefano and under his demands, which will include punishments. It isn’t all bad, but it goes against everything in Corey to accept being held prisoner and things out of her control.

“I might have to admit to myself that I enjoy being his captive. Leaving now would be a disappointment. I’m his captive. If I don’t cooperate, I’m dead.”

The plot will have Stefano and Corey getting off on a wrong start, but he tries to make things better, in his way, which is ordered her around. Corey has an independent streak, being a true red-head, and after living with an abusive father, then boyfriend, she doesn’t capitulate easily. She will find herself being punished and at Stefano’s mercy. He has been raised in the mob, taught to be tough, not to cry, and if that means killing, it’s all part of the family. What he wasn’t counting on was the way Corey makes him feel—and that is scary. The way she responds to his dominance is exhilarating and the more he is with her, the more he wants, he is becoming addictive to her. The only downfall, her father, a dirty FBI agent.

“I like it way too much. Just like you—a bad bet.” –Corey

“I don’t know. You try to define this; it’s not going to fit right. I’m not the one who’s gonna give you the white picket fence. I’m the guy who wants to pull your hair and slap you a** and spoil you rotten.”

“I still know our relationship is complicated—considering who our fathers are, but I don’t want to worry about that now. All I care about is getting closer to Corey. Getting into her head. Having her near me at all times.”

Stefano and Corey can’t seem to get enough of each other but issues with their families are always going to be there, and plays in the back of their minds. He comes from a Chicago mafia family, with his father serving time in prison, and she comes from middle America with an FBI agent and bully for a father. There is always the threat of trust, is she gathering evidence against him, or does he trust her? He listens to her stories of childhood, the abuse, the beratement, and what she wants and dreams of doing—and then he does what he can to make it happen, like taking her to another casino to play poker, including entering her in high stake games. He seems to be her champion, but do they really trust each other? What happens when something questionable comes up?

“I will always defend you.”

The story is a page-turner with a great cast of characters, plenty of interaction, with dominance and control by Stefano and submission eventually by Corey. She is no doormat, like her mother, she is a fighter, but knows when it is best to submit. The sex between them is an erotic dance of power exchange and includes punishments. What starts out as imprisonment and forced submission and punishments later becomes consensual. They will be tried by fire and tested between right and wrong, good and evil, and even though there will be a loss of faith, in the end, they will find their way back to each other and will have come through stronger than before.

“Justice was served, in its own way. It doesn’t matter to me if it happened on the right or wrong side of the law. My father didn’t uphold those laws.”

♠️ “You tell me when you want it, baby, and I’ll give it to you good.”

Stefano is Nico Tacone’s younger brother and the Head of Security at the Bellissimo casino. He’s one dangerous, cocky, arrogant and controlling man. And he definitely has the Tacone temper. I really loved his possessiveness, dominance and dirty talking mouth. Even more, Stefano’s one attentive and thoughtful man and I loved him very much.

Corey is a card dealer in the casino and Sondra’s cousin. I loved how smart, confident and sassy she is. Even more, I loved that she knew when to hold her own and when to back down. She’s a woman who definitely knows how to handle herself, read people and pay attention. Corey’s so awesome and I adored her!

I really enjoyed everything that happened between Corey and Stefano. When a private high stakes game goes wrong and Corey becomes witnesses of a crime, she’s taken prisoner and locked in Stefano’s bedroom. From the very beginning their chemistry was explosive, naughty and filled with blazing hot passion. But there was also a lot of family drama they had to deal with and it took some time for both to open up and trust each other. Their road to happiness was definitely a bumpy one. Nevertheless, Corey and Stefano were so perfect for each other and I absolutely loved their interactions. Oh, the Tacone men are just so irresistible!

Overall, the story is another fantastic addition to the series. It’s filled with suspense, danger, action, scorching hot romance and magnificent characters!

I loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next in the Tacone family

This series get better and better and the best part of it, you get to see into the lives of the ones before. Corey is a coupier at the Ballisimo Hotel and Casino when she's approached by a guy trying to cheat. Being the honest person she is she gets security involved only to find out it was a test by the New head of security Stefan Tacones. Stefan is the hot headed little brother of Nico. Stefan finds himself enthralled by the red head and his dominance is stronger than ever. Will Cory allow Stefan that power over her after the way she was raised? This is definitely a must read.

I retired as fiction librarian for the San Diego Public Library in order to spend more time on my writing. My stories, in every length from short shorts to novellas, have been published in numerous journals, including Eclectica, Thema Literary Journal, Nebo, and most recently Willow Review. Reluctant Hearts is my sixth book from the Wild Rose Press, and a suspense novella, The Axe, will be released in September. I have to say that this was a well written novella. Usually, with novellas, the insta-love is just so unbelievable because it’s such a fast paced story because the author has so much to get into in just a few chapters. With this plot, our main characters have been pining for each other for years, but there was a marriage contract (read about this in the first novel) that kept them off limits to each other. So, in this novella, when they basically get the go ahead to act on their feelings, it’s not that unbelievable to see them go to love really fast because the foundation of their feelings was already there.

The reason for the deduction of the 1 star:

-I’ve never been a fan of the “daddy” trope, or having a woman call her man daddy. I understand a lot of people do enjoy that, but it’s just not for me. No matter what, hearing “daddy” makes me think of my father and he is the LAST person I would ever want to think about during sex. I just can’t get past it. I know, I know, this short story is titled “Mafia Daddy” so I really should have known, but for some reason I was expecting a pregnancy trope or something.

Overall, it was a good and steamy novella to give us a quick story about Jenna and Alex who are side characters in the first novel

🔥 “Are you going to be a good girl for Daddy?”

Jenna’s dad - Don Giuseppe Pachino - has arranged for her to marry Nico Tacone since she was just a baby. But now, with Nico’s help, she’s free and just wants to be herself and make her own path in life, away from her criminal family. I really liked her!

Alex is Don G’s right hand and has been sent to find her and bring her back to the family. He’s one bossy, dominant, dangerous, possessive and dirty talking male. Even more, I loved how supportive and understanding he was of Jenna and her goals and feelings. Alex is a wonderful male and I loved him so much!

For years, both Alex and Jenna have been pining for each other but, with everything happening and Jenna’s marriage contract, neither of them has acted on it. Now, being alone in Ibiza, all bets are off and their undeniable attraction quickly develops into a blazing hot passion. They had a few bumps on their way to happiness but I really liked how well they fit together and worked for their relationship.

Overall, the story is a fantastic short and steamy read and I loved every page of it!

A wicked, tantalizing smile curved Jeremiah’s lips. “So you brought me here to take advantage of me?”
“You tell me. Is it working?” Garrett slipped his arms around Jeremiah’s waist. He’d never been this free and daring.
“I don’t know. You haven’t kissed me yet.”
Garrett leaned in and touched his lips to Jeremiah’s, catching the heat of his mouth. “How about now?”

“Brownie? Apple pie with ice cream? Or cheesecake?” He fluttered his lashes, and Garrett rolled his eyes.

“You don’t give up, do you?”

“Not when I want something.” He winked and handed the menu to Brayson. “We’ll do the strawberry cheesecake and apple pie with vanilla ice cream.”

“Sure thing. Be right back with everything.”

The tea and cappuccino came, followed a minute later by the cheesecake and pie. Jeremiah fed him, their eyes never breaking contact, and those same flutters in his stomach returned.

They tussled over the bill, with Garrett ultimately losing but insisting on paying the tip. Outside, Jeremiah called for a car.

“Seems stupid for both of us to go to Brooklyn in separate cars. We should share.”

Nerves rippled through him. Was he being foolish allowing himself to share a car with Jeremiah? While part of him relished the additional alone time, another froze at the magnitude of the step. Would Jeremiah pressure him and take him somewhere else? Would he want to come upstairs under the pretense of using the bathroom and… Oh, for God’s sake. He’d been watching too many crime shows. Of course it was a good idea. They’d been on a few dates, and Jeremiah had never pressed him for more than he was willing to give. They’d spoken only an hour earlier about how they were going to get to know one another on a deeper level, and more alone time would only help that.

“Sure. Makes sense.”

As they bounced along the FDR Drive, Jeremiah put an arm around him, and Garrett settled into his chest. “I had a very nice time tonight.” He should ask Jeremiah out this time.

“Me too,” Jeremiah murmured into his ear. “Can I see you Friday night? Are you busy?”

“I was about to ask you the same. No, I’m not busy, and I’d like that.”

“Great. We can do dinner and decide what else afterward.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Jeremiah’s hand tipped his chin so they faced each other. “My plan is to kiss you again, if that’s all right with you.”

“Another good idea.”

Their lips met, and Garrett eagerly welcomed the increasingly familiar taste of Jeremiah. His kisses captivated, the perfect mix of fire and sweet, and he didn’t know whether to be annoyed by the restraint of the seat belts or grateful for them, as he probably would’ve made a liar of himself about taking it slow and climbed the man.

SYNOPSIS:

All I wanted is for my little sister Della to be safe and happy. And maybe, in brief stolen moments, I dreamed of a happy ending for myself with a brown-eyed man. That hope has turned into sharp, bright fear. There’s only survival now.

I’m the daughter of a controlling and cruel billionaire, so I understand about power. But I find myself fighting anyway. I find myself testing them.

I have claws and I bite. I’m not going down without a fight.

It’s like I have a death wish.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

What have I done?

Disgust at my naivety has my stomach churning. It’s the fear, though, that has every muscle tight with tension and every hair on my body standing on end.

I did this.

To myself. To us.

Della.

I try to glean a sense of what I’m in for, scanning his bedroom for clues. It’s too normal for this situation. His bed is unmade from the morning before and clothes are scattered all over the floor. There’s a picture of him and his brothers framed and sitting on his desk. Nothing says that he’s a kidnapper…or worse.

A sob of horror tries to make its escape, but Scout’s hand is clamped almost painfully over my mouth. His arm around me is powerful and unyielding. I’m trapped.

Walked right into the one he set for me.

Now I’m all alone with Scout. In his bedroom.

Flashes of the bathroom at school assault my mind. Any pleasure I thought I got from it is erased in an instant. Whatever pain he inflicts on me this time will be worse because I won’t enjoy one second of it. On Friday, when it happened, I cared about him. Thought he was sick. Craved his touch and attention. Needed the promise of safety he offered.

What a joke.

And I’m a damn fool for falling for it.

“You won’t scream,” Scout says, voice cold and sharp like an icicle, piercing its way into my heart. “Because if you do, I’ll tape your pretty mouth shut. Plus, you don’t want to upset your little sister.”

I gag and tears flood my eyes. Though the urge to scream and hope someone will hear is high on my list of wants, I know that I won’t. Not if it means risking Della’s safety. I got her into this mess and I’m going to have to get her out of it.

Zoe, Rory and all the characters are one hundred percent believable. The plot itself is a hoot and at no point is Zoe the helpless victim waiting to be rescued, no matter how many screw-ups she gets herself into. Even when she does have to be rescued, she turns it to her own advantage.

Under false pretences and a fake name, she meets Danny Pearce, an obnoxious musician on the opposite end of the millennial spectrum. Danny is cocky, rude, and a contender for fuckboy of the year.

After a series of serendipitous encounters and a secret gig, Sophia unexpectedly falls for Danny. But when he is faced with his own demons, Sophia must reclaim her power and forgive the past, or risk losing the only thing that’s real.

EXCERPT:

Gently, he places a hand on the small of my back, guiding me into a small space in front of him. I want to lean into the warmth of his palm, to step back just a little to feel him behind me.

“Better?”

I close my eyes to savour his touch before turning around to thank him.

“No worries.”

Dimples indent his cheeks as he returns the smile, and I spin back around. I’m dizzy, and my heart is racing. I can’t decide if it’s a delayed side effect of the alcohol, or a Danny side effect, but I could easily get used to this feeling. The only downside is that his proximity resurfaces every ache I’d tried to bury when he was up on that stage.

My only hope to avoid going completely overboard with want for Danny Pearce is to focus on the music; the beams of light oscillating between us and the stage; the sensation in my body as the bass ripples through the floor and diffuses at my feet.

I try to focus on anything but the ghost of his breath in my hair, teasing trails down my neck. I lose balance, swaying with no rhythm as his body heat radiates onto mine, and I hope to God this feeling goes both ways. If not, I might die.

Monty addresses the crowd, snapping me out of my stupor. Much like Ollie had done previously, he relays anecdotes and speaks about his music, although his demeanour errs on the side of cockiness over confidence. He introduces his band, thanks the audience, and shares more self-indulgence, but there is no denying his talent.

The band continue their upbeat energy over the next few songs, and the crowd rambunctiously bounce along to hit after hit. But I can’t ignore the all-consuming pulsing and throbbing taking over my entire body, especially when there’s no way of avoiding Danny’s addictive Riviera scent.

Without a glance behind, I finally gather the courage to test the waters. I’ve never made the first move with anyone before, and I like it that way. I’m terrified, but if there was ever a time to take agency over my life, facing the fear of rejection in favour of something better, fighting the voices in my head that tell me I’m not good enough, this is it.

If I don’t try, I won’t know.

EXCERPT:

Bella

“Bella, Bella,” The gorgeous stranger whispered.

I let out a quiet sigh because I loved the way he called my name. His voice was gentle, like rustling leaves on a breezy night. With a smile, I tipped my head toward him. The moon hid behind a thin cloud, but its light was enough for me to see his chiseled jaw, long nose, and full, sexy lips.

“I love your baby blue eyes, Bella Bell,” he whispered again, lowering his face to mine. “Do you love me?”

“Yes,” I whispered back, my heart thundering in my chest as his hazel eyes looked straight at me. Oh my, he is going to kiss me? Yes … yes … Wait, maybe I have to be bolder. Swallowing, I placed my hands on his muscular hips.

“Bella,” he said, caressing my red hair before his hand stopped on the back of my neck and pulled me closer.

I closed my eyes, waiting for his warm kiss to touch mine, but nothing came. Clenching my jaw, I cupped his face with my hands and coaxed it toward me. Oddly, instead of kissing me, he called out, “Bella! Bella! Bella!” At the same moment, I heard loud sounds, like someone banging on the door. What the …

As much as I wanted to ignore the annoying interruption, I opened my eyes to find that the handsome, chiseled-jaw guy had disappeared, and my hands clenched my pillow a few inches in front of my face. It wasn’t real … but who dared to disturb my dream? I couldn’t moan for too long because the banging became louder, followed by my mom’s irritated voice. “Bella, how many times do I have to wake you up?”

Ugh, couldn’t Mom have woken me up a bit later, at least after I got my kiss? I groaned.

Jumping out of my bed, I opened the door to see my mom glaring at me. She was wearing a blue blazer and pencil skirt, ready for work at a local library as the senior librarian. In her late fifties, she looked great. She had fair skin and no wrinkles, and was a bit heavy at almost five feet tall. Her new hairstyle, short with blonde highlights made her look younger. I could see a flicker of jealousy in my dad’s eyes whenever a man glanced at her in awe. How I wished I had inherited her fair skin and would look like her when I was older. However, my older sister got our mom’s looks and I looked more like our dad. But thanks to the height from my dad, I was three inches taller than my mom.

A whiff of jasmine from her perfume hit my nose like the fresh air of spring. But my mom’s eyes and expression were far from gentle: They were more like a brewing storm.

“Bellalina Elizabeth Bell.” Her voice was loud and high when she called my full name—which she did whenever she was super upset. “You aren’t a kid anymore. You are almost twenty-two, for God’s sake. Why can’t you wake up on your own? I can’t believe that I have to wake you up like this in the morning,” she scoffed, and turned her body toward the kitchen. “Wipe your drool and brush your hair before going out.”

The corner of my mouth was damp as I wiped it with the back of my hand. As I followed my mom down to the kitchen, I tied my shoulder-length hair back with the hairband that was always around my wrist.

“That’s your fault,” I grumbled, and sat on the tall chair at the kitchen island where she’d already put a half gallon of orange juice, a box of cereal, breakfast sausages, six boiled eggs, and a pile of toast, jam, and butter. “I found an effective way to wake up without your help, but you complain about that.”

My mom almost rolled her bright blue eyes at me, but she restrained herself. “You set five different alarm clocks to wake you up every day. Five alarms, Bella. You refused to use your phone alarms and bought five metal twin-bell alarm clocks instead. And those are loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood.”

“But that’s effective,” I protested, helping myself to a glass of orange juice. “You know I’m not a morning person. Then when I found a way that works, you don’t like it.”

“Those damn alarm clocks can wake up the whole neighborhood,” she said slowly as if I didn’t comprehend her words the first time. I widened my eyes, and my mom sighed.

She opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by Mel’s entrance. Mel was willowy, five-ten with tan skin and freckles on her nose.
